Is it possible to read too much

You have to come to believe in yourself as a creative problem-solver and that this is yet another opportunity for you to search for solutions and test what works for you. We know that probably comes across as incredibly unsatisfying, and a good many of you are ready to stop reading this article now.

In fact, we want to say the very opposite: that you have the capacity within you to implement changes in the way you approach texts where you can consistently, week after week, get what you want from your assigned readings such that you are prepared for precepts and exams, and, ideally, can satisfy your own intellectual curiosity.

Only you can do that. So really, the beginning of the solution lies in you. You were able to generate and apply solutions that were truly impressive. Unlike how you read now, in a fairly direct, dogmatic, linear approach, you were willing to suspend beliefs in the right or wrong way to do something in order to entertain other approaches.

That is what we are asking you to do right now: suspend for the moment the assumption that linear reading is the right, or more importantly, the only way to read. Suspend for the moment the thought that the goal of reading is to read every word or simply to finish the reading.

Hold on instead to the belief that the goal of reading is to grow in knowledge and mastery of what is discussed — and to get better at reading and learning along the way. You need to cram, so reading linearly goes out the window. And the result? By the end of the book, my hair sticks up all over the place. This is "reader's hair," and if you read too much like me, it becomes your permanent hairstyle. Sometimes you get papercuts from turning the pages too fast.

And sometimes your thumb cramps up from pressing the "next page" button on your e-reader. These are the inconveniences of a true reader. When people say they've been reading the same book for several months, you're confused. Are they reading Infinite Jest? Because unless the book is over 1, pages, you probably finished it in one sitting.

That new bestseller everyone's raving about? Yes, you have read it. That classic your friend just finished and wants to discuss? It's your obsession. That up-and-coming YA novel that is about to become a movie? The first three are some of the best reason ever for reading. Or maybe not, all the other people that happened to were chosen for a specific reason. And you forgot the fact that you will never have enough time to do other important thing, so you will probably die too, or at least become unproductive, which is about as bad.

Omg YES to not having time for everything. Reminds me of all the things I love about reading. I am guilty of aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall that and I do not regret a thing!! And it helps that my bestie is as much a book fanatic as me.

Ahahaha XD. Honestly the life of a bookworm is SO hard, omg. We ought to get a medal for just existing, for real. Oh dear, 1 is so me. I think ALL the time and not from just reading books, but reading everything. Why did Rudy in The Book Thief die? Who cares? Also everything is so true especially the part where I think about buying books to shirts. I might end up in a book igloo in the future! I have nothing to add! This list is highly comprehensive.

The last one, number 10, gets me every single time. Where is the fairness. Being a huge reader has made me so critical of books, and that makes me extremely opinionated and stubborn when it comes to book debates. Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous post! But… SIX books!?!? What do they DO with the rest of the year? So… yeah. And all my friends DO die, and I am not okay with that. Have you read the book? It is not good. Haha this was a fun read.

Well, another side effect- you get addicted to book photography! It can ruin your life. Omg YES. That one too, absolutely and completely. So much truth. Those are the ones I remember!! And omg writing like that is definitely goals. Although currently I seem to just write melodramatic things.

But ahem. But whatever. You are a wonderful pineapple constantly. This post was too funny! Numbers 2, 3, and 7 were dead on! Thanks for always giving me something to think about or laugh as I read along. This is all very accurate, but especially 8 for me. SIX books a year?! I particularly like that your number one caution is thinking. Same with opinions. And everything else … just … LOL! I have experienced all of these problems.

Especially: books ARE pack creatures — there is no escape! Yes I can add to your list! And I agree with all of them hahaha! Another thing that can happen is that you mistake real life for book life. Which is sad! I guess when you read too much, it takes away time that can be used for something else? OMG, I love this!

Seriously just love this! But only 30??? You must live life on the edge sometime, Michelle. Nutcases, the lot of them. And the cycle just continues. Six books?! And then do it anyway. These are all very good reasons and another to add is that it can make our grades go down.

I love reading but school school school. Though I have been reading more this term than the last. I love this list. Maybe not a couple of days. The real question is, what do these people do with all this extra time, omg. Oh my gods! This post perfectly describes the bookish life!

I can relate to all these, especially no. Ya know what I mean? The bookworm life sure is tough. But fictional. But real. Omg I swear this is why bookworms suffer from so much emotional damage and trauma. This resonates on a deep level with my bookish heart, straight down into my soul. So yes, I love books. It actually really annoys me when people just dismiss reading as simply something pleasurable to do.

And eating is necessary. I mean, bookworms go through A LOT. Books devour everything. This is hysterical! And I read pretty much the whole post to my husband, and he is laughing.

I just posted a comment, but I was too slow on hitting the buttons that let me subscribe to your site. Can you please add me to your email list? I have 2; I prefer my Yahoo acct. Ah, man. Okay, this is such a cute and fun post. I totally agree with you on basically every count, especially the one about money. I can totally attest to that. I agree with else as well. Love this type of stuff. Long day. Only 6 books a year? Those sad, sad people. The more books the merrier. Too many books, too many fictional crushes and dead fictional friends and the ever growing TBR is definitely one of them.

Overdoes is a good state to be in basically. I mean, WAIT. Then all the people would stare at me. I usually go to the library to unpeople, but there was quite a lot of humans there today.

Good for the books though. Perhaps they ought to read this post and be warned. Signed my soul always to books long ago. I was going to say that I could totally live in a book igloo. But then what if I wanted to read one of the books that made up the foundation of the igloo? What do they do with their life?! Can you really be friends with a non-booklover? I am not a fan of that happening either, sheesh.

And also yes to the judging of non-bookloving friends. Bookless lives often lead to villainy. The internet said so. Haha Thanks to share these, it makes my day! It will be dastardly. I love this post! This, my dear Cait, is why you are so popular. This list made me smile!

I especially resonate with the one about buying more and more and more and justifying it, haha! My dream is to turn a room in my house into a library when I grow up! Omg this is so so accurate!!

Pff, no such thing. Only one book? Never heard of it! Literally all the struggles. Though I must say I agree with you on the food thing. No way am I going foodless.. Cake is much to important. XD Awesome post, Cait! The TBR pile plotting my demise, though… that I knew. I expect death-by-a-thousand-paper-cuts imminently. This is great!! Thank you. I have read twenty books in the past week and a half. I think this addiction is terminal. But this idiot who make this stupid arrival is trying to make kids become stupid to make books unwanted!!!

Reading is good for you if build up imagination, creativity, it makes you unafraid of being weird, it helps you read faster and it helps you with spelling and grammar!!!!! I hope you mend it soon Cait. Reading might help you. What is this cesspool of nonsense? Thinking is something we HAVE to do as human beings to survive and thrive!

Sure, overthinking can kill you well actually the stress caused by over thinking can kill you, but you get the point , but to avoid thinking just to avoid overthinking is like not eating at all to avoid getting fat. My point here is that your article is just full of things that make little sense; I bet half of them were just things you made up in your head. This is nothing but a joke. Though I will admit, me being here and commenting is completely pointless, and I may be exaggerating quite a bit like you.

I realize this when I consider how I crammed my every spare minute with audiobooks; from the minute I woke up to the minute I fell asleep, I would have Audible blaring through my headphones.

I consumed the tome Thinking, Fast and Slow in this fashion, which is likely why I have only a vague recollection of the concepts discussed within it. But overwhelming yourself with an endless stream of information is the same as washing away the rich history you learn in a novel like Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind with a thorough perusal of a trashy magazine.
