You can pay anyone with a cheque if they accept it. Only accept cheques from people you trust. Some banks let you pay in a cheque using their mobile banking app by taking a photo of the cheque and submitting some details.
Money usually clears on the next day, Monday to Friday, but can take longer over the weekend or on public holidays. Paying in a cheque in the usual way would take up to six days. So doing it digitally on an app is much quicker. If you think you made a mistake — for example, you wrote the wrong name on your cheque or you lost it — you can ask your bank to cancel it.
This involves your bank sending the cheque to the bank that issued it, by first class post. Your bank will then confirm, by phone the next day, if the money will be paid. If you pay in a post-dated cheque, it might be returned to you unpaid.
This is because there are many fake drafts out there — for example, for car payments. Keep a record of each cheque you write on the stub in your chequebook. Check these against your statement and report any problems to the bank as soon as you can. MoneyHelper is the new, easy way to get clear, free, impartial help for all your money and pension choices.

How bank drafts work: When you ask to purchase a bank draft, the funds are immediately withdrawn from your deposit account. These funds are put into the bank's reserve account until the bank draft is presented for payment. As the purchaser of the bank draft, you are responsible for delivering the bank draft to the payee.
In addition to the time it takes to get the draft to the person receiving the money, when they go to cash it, banks will often put a hold on it for three to five days. So they can continue to collect interest.
Weiman said banks are aggregating millions of dollars, even if they earn an annual rate of one per cent. The float has been a source of revenue since the days when everything was done on paper and sent through old-fashioned mail, Weiman says.
The Bank of Canada says those are treated the same as an unclaimed balance in a bank account. After 10 years, if there has been no activity and the owner can't be contacted, the balance is turned over to the Bank of Canada.
That didn't happen with Camacho. Camacho says he still had to sign an indemnity promising the original draft wouldn't be cashed. But he didn't have to put up a deposit. And it will be electronic wire transfers from now on, he says.
His days of using bank drafts are over. Pseudonyms will no longer be permitted. By submitting a comment, you accept that CBC has the right to reproduce and publish that comment in whole or in part, in any manner CBC chooses.
